Sculpture in Bronze, Stone, Steel and Clay

Sculpture · Works

Sculpture posted by the people who made it: cast bronze, carved stone, welded and bolted steel, fired clay, wood, and material pulled out of a skip. Most pieces appear from more than one side, because a single straight-on photograph flattens the one thing that separates a sculpture from a picture of a sculpture.

Process shows up in the surface. Sand-cast bronze keeps the seam lines; lost wax does not. Direct carving leaves tool marks that a pointing machine removes. Raku crazes, stoneware does not. A welded piece tells you where the fabricator stopped grinding. None of that survives a thumbnail, which is why the detail shots matter as much as the full view.

A work page holds images and, in sculpture, video more often than not, because a piece that turns, balances or moves has to be seen doing it. Audio, embedded clips and as much text as the work needs all fit alongside. From any piece the sculptor's profile is one click away, with the contact details they put there themselves, and reaching it costs nothing.

Dimensions are the first thing to read. A maquette and the full-size piece look identical on screen and are separated by two orders of magnitude in weight, handling and where they can stand. Editions matter too: a bronze in an edition of eight is a different proposition from a unique carving. Artists who state both tend to state everything else.
